Pussy Riot - a feminist discussion

Kristina Hultman, a Swedish feminist, journalist and author with far knowledge on gender and LGBTQ issues, will discuss the political climate in Russia from a feminist’s point of view. Special focus will lie on the debate around the Russian punk band Pussy Riot.

After a performance in the Moscow Cathedral in February 2012, three members of the punk band Pussy Riot were arrested and convicted of ‘hooliganism’ motivated by religious hatred. The global attention following the arrests and convictions has highlighted the judicial and democratic deficit as well as the harsh climate for feminist activism in today’s Russia. The Russian Orthodox Patriarch Kirill has recently stated in media that feminism is a ‘very dangerous phenomenon that could lead to the destruction of Russia. The debate about the civil rights in Russia has also been brought to the light in recent months following the ‘anti-gay propaganda’ laws that the Duma passed in June 2013.
