Poland & Europe - A constitutional crisis?

Brännpunkt Europa invites you to an exciting seminar about the current political situation in Poland after the election in 2015 in connection with the criticism the country received from the EU.

Lecturer:
Mr Włodzimierz Cimoszewicz, former prime minister in Poland.
Peter Johnsson, senior foreign correspondent in Poland.

Since the Polish political party Law and Order (Prawo i Sprawidliwość) formed a government after the parliamentary elections in 2015, the country has faced a political crisis. Regardless of demonstrations by citizen against the new government and their policies, the party still has support. The government has also received strong criticism from the European Commission for risking a constitutional crisis.

Mr Cimoszewicz was the Polish Prime Minister from 1996-97, Foreign Minister 2001-2005 and in 2005 Speaker of the Sejm of Poland.

Peter Johnsson is a foreign correspondent and lives in Warsaw. He has written several books on Poland and will issue another one next year.

Don’t miss out on this opportunity to get some insights into Polish politics. We hope to see you all there!

NATO and the EU

NATO and the EU- Sweden's military cooperation
Myths and facts

We from Brännpunkt are proud to present Major General Karl L E Engelbrektson - Former charimain of NATO CFI Task Force and Swedish Armed Forces. He is going to give you a talk about NATO and the EU. The Connected Forces Initiative (CFI) aims to enhance the high level of interconnectedness and interoperability Allied forces have achieved on operations and with partners. CFI combines a comprehensive education, training, exercise and evaluation programme with the use of cutting-edge technology to ensure that Allied forces remain prepared to engage cooperatively in the future
The year is 2016.
The world is an uncertain place, ravaged by conflict and strife, and there are daily threats to peace. In Syria, the bloody civil war rages on, and in the east there is an eerie echo from the past in the form of a more aggressive and expansive Russia.

Many argue that Sweden is poorly equipped to deal with this reality. The big divide in Swedish defense politics is about the military alliance NATO - we either join officially or remain on the edge of it in the name of Swedish neutrality.
But what is NATO? How does the defense alliance operate, and how does it work together with the EU? In the heated political climate myths may circulate, so what's true and what's not?
To illuminate the public on this subject, we have the honour and the pleasure of presenting Major General Karl Engelbrektson of the Swedish Armed Forces.

The Major General has previously served as Force Commander of the Nordic Battle Group and was Sweden’s former Military Representative to the EU and NATO, and we’re delighted to be able to partake of his long experience and insights into the world of defense politics.
Because even in this uncertain world, we at Brännpunkt Europa still hold one thing for certain: knowledge and education are the keys to peace and a better world of tomorrow.

Comparing the US and Europa: Identity Politics and the Welfare State

Brännpunkt Europa invite you to the first lunch-lecture this fall. We are proud to present Mr. Harvey Feigenbaum who is a professor of Political Science and International Affairs, at George Washington University.

People who visited the US and Europe are confronted with major differences: The American welfare state is smaller, it is more religious, and its political spectrum skews to the right of Europeans. An explanation for these differences can be found in the different conditions of industrialization and in the different kinds of identity politics. In America, politics is constrained by race, religion, and ethnicity. In Europe, the principal constraint is class. On both sides of the Atlantic, changes in the world economy are undermining the welfare state and introducing new forms of political conflict.

GLOBAL WEEK ANNUAL LECTURE BY RICHARD HORTON

Global health is about to undergo a seismic shift. But does anyone truly understand the nature and scale of that shift? The future for global health cannot be "business as usual." The Ebola epidemic has exposed severe failures in our global health architecture.

Now is the moment to review and revise our hopes and expectations for the future of health worldwide. Unless we challenge all of our assumptions about global health, we may not only fail to advance human wellbeing, we may jeopardise the very survival of our species.

”The opportunity of uncertainty: new directions in global health" is the title for the Global Week Annual Lecture by keynote speaker Richard Horton, Editor-in-Chief of the Medical Journal The Lancet .

In his role as Editor-in Chief, he is a protector and defender of human health and integrity. He has a strong interest in issues of Global Health and have made a significant contribution to the understanding of human health and wellbeing, especially in low and middle income countries.

Richard Horton is an honorary professor at the Sahlgrenska Academy, University of Gothenburg, since 2013.
