Brännpunkt Europa invites you to an interesting lunch lecture about the illiberal turn in Poland and how the museums became a political battleground.

Place: Sappören, Campus Haga, Sprängkullsgatan 25
NOTE: The event will be held in English // FREE Lunch baguettes for the first 30 arrivals

The keynote speaker of this event is Professor Paweł Machcewicz, former director of the Museum of the Second World War in Gdańsk. He was dismissed two weeks after the opening of the Museum by the Law & Justice's (PiS) government. Debates about the memory of WWII and its use for current political purposes ensued. Some view the sacking of Prof. Machcewicz as a sign of the new government's illiberal inclination to control the cultural sphere.

Machcewicz will tell his story for the first 30 minutes, followed by expert comments on the rise of illiberalism in Poland and the current political situation in the country.

Following the speakers, there will be a panel discussion with an opportunity for the audience to pose questions.

Anamaria Dutceac Segesten: Euroscepticism and Media

Thursday, April 19, 2018

12:15 PM  1:00 PM

Brännpunkt Europa (map)

Brännpunk Europa invites you to an interesting lunch seminar with Anamaria Dutceac Segesten.

This lecture will focus on research about how the rise of Euroscepticism may contribute to the Europeanization of national public spheres. Ever since the 2014 European Parliament elections, which resulted in over one quarter of the available seats going to Eurosceptic party members, national media outlets in several Member States reported about the ‘earthquake’, ‘virus’, or ‘rising tide’ of Euroscepticism sweeping across the continent. If, as certain scholars argue, a unified media discourse about the EU can foster the perception of a European demos, then the media’s coverage of Euroscpetics may provide the type of salient pan-European narrative conducive for a European public sphere to emerge.

Despite previous research demonstrating that the media’s coverage of the EU can influence public opinion, the mass media remains an underexplored actor in the studies of Euroscepticism. In their research Anamaria Dutceac Segesten and Michael Bossetta therefore compares the media discourse about Euroscepticism in 2014 across six countries (United Kingdom, Ireland, France, Spain, Sweden and Denmark), in order to asses the extent to which the mass media’s reporting of Euroscepticism indicates the Europeanization of public spheres.

When: April 19th, 12:15-13:00

Where: Spränkullsgatan 19, room B210

NOTE: Free baguettes for the first 20 to arrive.

NOTE: This event is held in english

Anamaria Dutceac Segesten is a political scientist, working within the field of European Studies, with an interest for questions concerning democracy, political communication and collective identity. She received her PhD from the University of Maryland at College Park, and is presently holding the vice-chair of the Centre for European Research at Lund Univeristy. Segesten is currently researching conflicts of memory in Europe after 1989, as well as communicative politics and political symbolism.

Top Income Shares: Political and Economic Determinants

Please join us for a stimulating keynote speech to kick off the conference Welfare, Inequality, and the Social Dimension in Europe, which will take place from 16-17 November at the University of Gothenburg.

‘Top Income Shares: Political and Economic Determinants’- Keynote Speech by Professor John D. Stephens, Centre for European Studies, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, USA:

The rise of the super-rich has attracted much political and academic attention in recent years. However, there have been few attempts to explain the cross-national along with the temporal variation in the rise of top incomes. Drawing on the World Wealth and Income Database, we study the income share of the top 1% in almost all current postindustrial democracies from 1960 to 2012. We find that extreme income concentration at the top is a predominantly political phenomenon, not the result of increasing marginal productivity of top managers in markets of increasing size. Top income shares are largely unrelated to economic growth, increased knowledge-intensive production, export competitiveness, and wealth accumulation, though they are related to stock market capitalization and some measures of financialization. Instead, they are closely associated with political and policy changes some of which reflect a decline in the relative power of labor, such as union density and centralization, secular-right governments, top marginal tax rates, and investment in public tertiary education.

Location: SEB-salen, The School of Business, Economics and Law
Time: 12.00-14.00

Coffee and cake will follow the keynote speech, all are welcome to attend, no registration needed!
